Why your site costs more than the quote says.

A website quote is a guess about scope. Here are the four line items — content, revisions, integrations, aftercare — that quietly double the final bill.

An invoice for a small business website with unexpected extra line items

A website quote is a guess about scope. When the scope moves — and it always moves — the guess becomes a change order. Here's where the money usually goes.

01 · Content nobody agreed to write

Most quotes assume you'll supply the words and photos. Most owners don't have time. Copywriting and photography then arrive as extras, mid-build, at the worst possible moment for your budget.

02 · Revisions past the included round

Two rounds sounds generous until you count the small asks. Each one is billable, each one is reasonable, and together they're often a third of the final invoice.

Ask what happens on the eleventh small change. That answer is the real price of the project.

03 · The integration nobody scoped

Booking, payments, a CRM, an old inventory system. Each one is a day you didn't budget for and a subscription that renews forever.

04 · Hosting, updates and aftercare

A site is a living thing. Plugins update, forms break, someone needs a new page. Either that's a flat monthly number you agreed to up front, or it's an hourly rate you find out about when something's already broken.

05 · Quick answers

  • Should I ask for a fixed-price website? Yes — ask what's explicitly excluded, not just what's included. The exclusions are where the extra costs hide.
  • How many revision rounds is normal? Two to three defined rounds is standard. Anything past that should be priced, in writing, before you start.
  • Is monthly website hosting worth paying for? If it includes updates, backups and someone to call when something breaks, yes — the alternative is an hourly rate mid-emergency.
